23	8/22/2023 13:02:19	Howard	D	Printed Materials	"Grendel" John Gardner (Novel)	Dual Enrollment English 12 (ENG 245)	12	Nudity, Sexual Conduct, Sadomasochistic Abuse	There are some light references to procreation and sharing a marital bed, as well as descriptions of a goat's "balls" and need to mate. There are references to blood in the place between Wealtheow's legs. As for the "sadomasochistic abuse," I struggled to call this section of this novel that as it isn't sexual for Grendel, but is torturous contemplation of killing Wealtheow while she is naked as she is pulled from bed. "He spreads her legs and thinks about cooking the “ugly hole” between them over a fire." Grendel also finds a naked corpse which is not described in detail, and Beowulf is described as getting naked to fight with Grendel (in order to level the playing field). The sexual content in Grendel is a small part of this novel, which offers an insightful portrayal of humanity. Grendel, and other books in the curriculum, must be viewed as an entire work, with its pedagogical value and literary framework taken into account, and not reduced to isolated passages.

There is a subtle understanding that he raped her. There is also a line about women wanting men who are "good in bed". To understand the theme of this section of the Canterbury Tales, it is imperative that the students understand the plot point of sexual assault at the center of it.

I am also planning on taking my students to see this play at the Shakespeare Theater in Staunton this fall, so I would like to read it beforehand. Sexuality and Oedipal concepts are at the center of the themes of darkness surrounding the titular character, and a Shakespeare play should be read in it's original and in its entirety. As a collegiate, 200-level class, I believe the students are mature enough to handle this. The quotes in question: "In the rank sweat of an enseamed bed/Stewed in corruption, honeying, and making love/Over the nasty sty." (Hamlet to Gertrude) A3S4 "O most wicked speed, to post/With such dexterity to incestuous sheets." (Hamlet) (repulsion of his mother's choice in Claudius) "Then you live about her waist, or in the middle of her favours? / Faith her privates we." (Hamlet to Rosencrantz and Guilderstern) Hamlet is teasing his friends about how they are both not having any sex.

Quotes: "Sex, however pleasant, felt mechanical" "We made love" "We had an agreeable sex life" "I stopped looking for a lover" That's all. There are no other descriptions or mentions. This story is imperative to one of my essential questions about science fiction as a vehicle for philosophical questions of existence and what it means to exist. These are very mild mentions of sex, and my students are mature enough to handle it.

However, if a student were to try to find this article on their own (if they lost their printed copy perhaps), then it's possible they would encounter that section. The article itself is a well-written, peer reviewed academic piece on how humans relate to service robots and their increasing role in our society. It fits in snugly with the science fiction unit and essay questions, and I feel it's important for my 200-level students to be reading academic articles and works to use to support their research essays.
